Antonia Bance MP has visited BJS in Wednesbury for a discussion about the future of the UK's transport and logistics sector, with attracting the next generation of people into the industry high on the agenda.

The Member of Parliament for Tipton and Wednesbury was welcomed by BJS Haulage Sales Director David McWilliams and Haulage Business Development Manager Jay Sandhar, who provided an insight into the scale and variety of work taking place across BJS Home Delivery and BJS Haulage.

The visit also provided an opportunity to discuss one of the most important long-term challenges facing the sector: how the industry attracts more young people into HGV, LCV and wider logistics careers.

Opening the door to the next generation

Transport and logistics plays a fundamental role in the UK economy.

From moving goods between manufacturers, warehouses and retailers to making the final delivery into customers' homes, millions of everyday transactions depend on the people working behind the scenes to keep products moving.

Despite its importance, the sector continues to face challenges around skills, recruitment and the perception of logistics as a career.

For BJS, addressing that challenge requires more than simply recruiting for today's vacancies. It means helping more young people understand the breadth of opportunities available and creating clearer routes into the industry.

Careers in modern logistics extend far beyond driving. Fleet management, transport planning, warehousing, technology, customer experience, engineering, compliance, operations and management all form part of an increasingly diverse and technology-led sector.

The discussion explored how businesses, government and the education sector can work more closely together to improve awareness of these opportunities and encourage more people to consider logistics as a long-term career.

Showcasing logistics in Wednesbury

During the visit, Antonia was introduced to the work taking place across two of the BJS Family's core businesses.

BJS Home Delivery operates specialist two-person delivery services for retailers and manufacturers, delivering big and bulky products into customers' homes across the UK.

BJS Haulage provides general haulage services to businesses throughout the country, supporting the movement of goods through the UK's supply chain.

Together, the businesses demonstrate the range of skills and career paths required by today's logistics industry, from drivers and warehouse teams through to planners, fleet professionals, customer service teams and operational leadership.

The Wednesbury visit also highlighted the important role logistics employers can play in creating skilled, sustainable employment within the West Midlands.

Working together to secure the industry's future

A key theme throughout the conversation was collaboration.

Solving the industry's future skills challenge cannot fall to employers alone. Businesses can create opportunities and invest in training, but greater engagement between employers, schools, colleges, local government and national government can help introduce people to logistics much earlier in their careers.

By improving understanding of the sector and the progression available within it, BJS believes the industry can challenge outdated perceptions and build a stronger pipeline of talent for the future.

David McWilliams, Sales Director at BJS Haulage, said:

"It was a pleasure to welcome Antonia to Wednesbury and have such an open conversation about the future of our industry. Logistics offers some fantastic long-term careers, but as a sector we need to get much better at showing young people what those opportunities actually look like.

"There is a real opportunity for businesses, education and government to work more closely together. If we can get more young people seeing logistics as a career of choice, rather than simply something they fall into, that will be hugely positive for the future of the sector."

BJS would like to thank Antonia Bance MP for taking the time to visit, meet the team and engage with the challenges and opportunities facing transport and logistics.

The conversation does not end with the visit. BJS looks forward to continuing to work with local stakeholders to champion careers in logistics and help build the skilled workforce the industry will need for the future.
